Affording Auto Repair

About Me

Affording Auto Repair

I wish that I knew how to do my own auto repairs, but I’m just not mechanically inclined. I’ve tried to learn to do basic things, but so far it just hasn’t worked out for me. Since I can’t save money by doing my auto repairs myself, I try to save money as best I can by shopping around for the best deals in auto repair in my town. I’ve also learned that even if I can’t fix my own car problems, I can educate myself about them. You’d be surprised how many repair shops will try to charge you for unnecessary repairs. I’ve learned enough that I understand how to spot those unnecessary charges and avoid them, and I stick with the shops that I know aren’t trying to cheat me.

Practical Tips For Preventing Car Scratches And Swirls

Dents and scratches on your car can not only harm its appearance, but also negatively affect its resale value. Car owners often go to great lengths to prevent auto body damage that would cause others to see their car in a bad light. Here are some tips to protect your car during washing and while in public parking lots.

Preventing scratches in parking lots

One of the most common places where your car can suffer severe auto body damage is in parking lots at the gym, supermarket or other places where careless patrons and vandals pose a constant threat. Such places are bustling with other cars, so the possibility of your car sustaining parking-lot door dings is high.

To minimize the risk of damage, you should try parking in as isolated an area as possible. These far-away spots are unappealing to most drivers, so you will often find wide, open spaces to park. The inconvenience of having to walk a significant distance to get to an entrance is a small price to pay if you can avoid incurring the costs of scratch and dent repair.

If you cannot find a remote parking spot, try looking for an uncovered corner space so that fewer cars surround you, and the chances of doors swinging open into your car and causing deep dents are reduced. Alternatively, try your best to park next to low-risk vehicles that are less likely to cause damage to your car. For instance, motorcycles do not have doors that would cause damage, while vans with sliding doors are also preferable.

If you can find an enclosed parking lot, it would be advisable to park inside to protect your car from threats such as bird droppings and nuts or acorns from trees.

Preventing damage when car cleaning

Car cleaning, when done wrong, can be a leading cause of unsightly swirls and scratches on your vehicle. Abrasive household cleaning brushes should never be used to remove tough car stains, as they easily scrape off car paint. Try to use tar removers, bird muck remover, clay bars and other appropriate stain removers depending on the issue at hand.

Secondly, avoid using sponges and use a wash mitt/microfiber cloth instead, as sponges easily drag grit and dirt across your paintwork. You should also wash from top to bottom to ensure grit is washed off the car before scrubbing.

Finally, avoid using household detergents, as they often strip off wax or sealant from your car, leaving the paint exposed to tar, bird droppings and other substances that can cause corrosive damage.
